GD1&2 "FINAL PROJECT"- Cover Design

Posted on April 15th, 2019

Your final is a cover design where you are going to use some of the stylistic qualities that you see in Art Deco design.

Questions you should be asking:
1) Cover of what?
2) What are the stylistic qualities in Art Deco?

Keep on reading for the answers to these questions!

Seniors you are going to design the cover of your graduation  program cover. The "program" is the little booklet that is handed out to all who attend the event. Graduation is officialy called the Commencement Ceremony.

If you are not a senior you are going to design the cover for next years Student Planner.

I am making this your final because I want you to put out your best effort even though you might have a raging case of Senioritis or end of the year laziness or apathy.

So what is ART DECO you ask? Well I’m glad you asked. Art Deco was a popular international art design movement from 1925 until the 1940s, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts and film.

It features strong shapes and bold colors. It uses designs from ancient and/or non-Western cultures such as ancient Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Japanese, Chinese, Mayan and Aztec. This style often uses geometric forms and includes stylized images. Rays and steps are common features. It also used natural motifs of organic shapes such as shells, trees and flowers with bold colors and striking blacks. There is a distinctive look to Art Deco style fonts and they are often used in posters in experimental ways.

How can you use these features in your design? Well step one is to know and recognize the style. Next you are going to create a design inspiration collage of Art Deco art, design, posters, architecture, jewelry, ironwork etc.

Learn more about Art Deco HERE

Step 1: Create a photoshop file that is 18"x 18" and 150ppi. Go onto the internet and look for a variety of Art Deco design examples that give you ideas for your design. You might make a geometric border inspired by a piece of Deco ironwork. Or a stylized drawing of a graduate inspired by drawing of a chef on an Art Deco poster. You might use bold "Deco" colors, or clean Modern deco lines. Choose at least 20 Art Deco examples to work from such as posters that have both writing and images, architectural details (stair rails, balcony railings, other decorative features such as reliefs and murals), furniture, appliances, paintings, and sculpture. As you see things that catch your eye, drag them into your photoshop document.

Step 2: Draw three thumbnail sketches of ideas for the event that you are designing for.

Step 3: Create your Cover design in Adobe Illustrator. Size 8"x10" for the Commencement cover and 5.25" x 8.25" for the Student planner.
