GRAPHIC DESIGN SYLLABUS

Design Matters

Hello all students. Welcome back to school.

I hope that you had a great summer and that getting up early wasn’t too much of a shock to your system. You are reading this because you are enrolled in this class- Computer Graphic Design. This class is a yearlong class that fulfills your CSU and UC requirement for art. It is both a computer class and an art class. We use the computer as our primary tool to create graphic designs.

Today we are going to make our seating chart and view examples of student work from the past, to give you an idea about what to expect for this year.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES:
·To find creative solutions to design problems
·To learn to use the tools and techniques of the graphic designer
·To learn ways to communicate visually.
·To learn more about art related career opportunities.

What is graphic design?

Graphic design is all around us. It includes printed materials such as posters, book covers, advertisements, CD covers, business cards, stationery, logos, packaging, and non-printed materials such as web sites and video/TV graphics. Graphic designers use text (words), illustrations, and photographs to communicate information and ideas and also to create a look and an identity for a company or other sort of client. In a nutshell, graphic design is about solving visual problems.

What will we be doing?

Creating graphic designs of course! You will learn how to recognize and use the design elements and principles to make eye-catching graphic designs that clearly communicate ideas and information. You will learn how to use two of the top tools of professional designers, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software, which will allow you to create and combine text with graphic images such as drawings, logos and photographs.

First semester will cover the design elements and principles using Adobe Photoshop for digital imaging, special effects, animation, and design layout. Projects will include posters, book covers,CD covers, and magazine covers.

Second semester we will be using Adobe Illustrator. Projects will include type design, logo design, illustration, and packaging design. Towards the end of the year we will be working with a combination of both programs. You will create and present a digital portfolio.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES:
·To find creative solutions to design problems
·To learn to use the tools and techniques of the graphic designer
·To learn ways to communicate visually.
·To learn more about art related career opportunities.
