Surrealist/ Art Element-Space Project

SURREALISM is a cultural movement and artistic style that was founded in 1924 by André Breton. Surrealism style uses visual imagery from the subconscious mind to create art without the intention of logical comprehensibility.

SPACE is the area between and around objects. The space around objects is often called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art when we can create the feeling or illusion of depth we call it space.
"The mind loves the unknown. It loves images whose meaning is unknown, since the meaning of the mind itself is unknown."
Rene Magritte

René Magritte (1898-1967)

The Belgian artist René Magritte was a Surrealist painter famous for bizarre images depicted in a realistic manner. Many of his paintings showed a dignified gentleman in a bowler hat.

René Magritte was a master not only of the obvious, but of the obscure as well. In his artwork, Magritte toyed with everyday objects, human habits and emotions, placing them in foreign contexts and questioning their familiar meanings.

He suggested new interpretations of old things in his deceivingly simple paintings, making the commonplace profound and the rational irrational. He painted his canvasses in the same manner as he lived his life -- in strange modesty and under constant analysis.

Project- Create your own dreamlike Surrealist Self Portrait/Dream composition using images that you combine in an unusual manner. *Do not use cartoons of other form of flat artwork because thay will not create an illusion of 3-D space.

Use the principles of aerial perspective to create a scene that shows depth.
They are:
1) size (closer things are larger)
2) overlapping,
3) focus (closer is clearer- use the blur filter)
4) saturation (lower color saturation for far away objects)
5) Value (things fade out as they are farther away)
6) placement (on land things nearer to the bottom are closer and should be larger)

SIZE- 8"x10" Resolution 150

Hint: size, overlapping, focus, color intensity, shadow intensity, blue cast,
